The Zonulin Connection: How Gluten and Bacteria Trigger Permeability

In 2000, researcher Alessio Fasano identified a protein called zonulin, the only known physiological modulator of intestinal tight junctions. Zonulin is a 47 kDa protein (specifically, pre-haptoglobin 2) that reversibly regulates tight junction permeability when released by intestinal cells.

A caveat on testing: Commercial zonulin blood tests marketed directly to consumers have significant methodological problems.
